Despite a really great graphical and physics engine, the gameplay is predictable, consoley (there are these so-caleld quicktime events where you have to mash the button that displays on screen) and utterly, mind-retardingly linear. The story couldn't be more hackneyed if they tried, and the attempts to chop things up the mech sections seem forced and out of place.
It's Quake on rails for the NOW! generation and scandalously ignores some of the advances we've had in the FPS genre since Q1 times. At one point I needed a keycard to advance, looked directly left into a darkened room and Lo! there was a corpse with the keycard I needed. Not exactly taxing.
As for the fear factor, well, some bits do feel genuinely spooky and horror-filled, so well done to the devs for that, but by the time you're out of the hospital area you know when the scary bits are about to hit and they don't feel quite so scary any more. Your character starts heavy breathing and you know something is about to happen so you prepare for it and get ready to hit the slow-mo key.
So, the graphics are very good, the sound is truly excellent, the enemy AI is very tight but level design is atrocious, an absolute atrocity. And the gameplay? Gameplay is poor. If you're wavering, pick it up on budget - it's not worth full price. |
